MEET THE ART COMMITTEE OF KUNSTHALLE TURKU

Through the open call, the Kunsthalle Turku exhibitions are selected by the Art Committee, which consists of members from The Turku Artists’ Association (TTS) and Photographic Centre Peri (Peri). Exhibitions for the year 2022 are chosen by  Marjatta Holma, Milja-Liina Moilanen, Iiris Elena Rusi, Anni Savolainen, Lydia Toivanen and Henri Tuominen.

Marjatta Holma (TTS) lives and works at Turku. Holma is focused on painting and has created spatial, monumental and minimalist continuum of paintings through both private and group exhibitions. Her work lies in the terrain between spontaneity and concreteness, their material revealing its forms in a space. Holma is interested in art which is born through sincere and uncompromised elaboration and searching.

Milja-Liina (Peri) is a director and media artist, who works with themes relating to otherness and social reclusiveness. She is a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts. Presently, Moilanen is directing a long documentary film on reality tv’s female representation for Tuffi Films with Eveliina Pasanen. Art that addresses social issues and the shaking of stuctures are close to Moilanen’s heart.

Iiris Elena Rusi (TTS) is a wide-range artist from Turku, who in her art research is interested in for example moral problems, sexuality as well as power relations both in society and between individuals. Presently, Rusi is working on a communal project consisting of stories with its main publication channel being social media.

Anni Savolainen (Peri) is a photographer and media researcher living in Turku. Presently, she is working on a long documentary series on the Finnish Shamani people. She has, in the role of an assistant, done research on photographs in social media and Finnish television in the 1970s and 1980s. In addition, Savolainen has done editorial research on documentary film and action research on executing a short film series.

Lydia Toivanen (Peri) is a visual artist from Turku, who graduated from Turku’s Arts Academy  photography program in the spring of 2019. She graduated as a Visual Artist in 2012 from Saimaas’ University of Applied Sciences, majoring in sculpture. Toivanen’s main techniques are photography and video and presently, she is working on a music video together with the artist Johanna Porola for Porola’s single Easy. Together with Sanna-Liisa Suominen she also forms the video collective SUOMINEN/TOIVANEN, whose works are ”poetically charged with a semi-documentary picture of the times” and based on the contiuous presence of the phone (=camera) and the  manic perceiving and documentting of surrounding life.

Henri Tuominen (TTS) is a Fine Arts graduate of Spring 2019 from Turku’s Academy of Arts. In his artistic work he is mainly focused on expressive painting. One of the basis for Tuominen’s work is often the tradition of the portrait, which is connected to the societal power structures and which he critically researches through painting. His paintings often deal with the manifestation of power or violence in society either on a structural or individual level.
