The birth words of Peri ry were pronounced in autumn 1987, as a group of Turku based photographers founded the Peri 8 photo gallery on Rauhankatu. Woth an open and flexible exhibition policy the group aimed to enliven the photographic culture in the city. In addition to introducing well-known photographers, they wanted to open way for newcomers. The support association for the gallery was founded by Helena Tuomaala, Matti Valta, Olli Hietanen and Teppo Arell. Peri developed into a regional photographic center after moving to the Turku Cultural Center by the Old Grand Square in 1990. During the years 2010-2018 Peri’s office, gallery and library were located in the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum maintained by the Turku Museum Centre.
How did Peri become peri? (… and what does it mean?)
Those interested in the deeper story can delve into the history of the association through a 30-year jubilee publication assembled and designed by journalist and writer Marja Saleva. “Peri-aatteita 1987-2017 – Poimintoja Turun 30-vuotiaan valokuvayhdistyksen historiasta” is available for purchase at the Artoteque at Kunsthalle Turku.
