Turku Artists’ Association’s 99th Annual Exhibition at Iso Galleria in Kunsthalle Turku, January 13th to February 26th, 2023
The 99th Annual Exhibition has been curated by set designer and puppet theatre artist Johanna Latvala.
The Turku Artists’ Association’s 99th Annual Exhibition received 151 work proposals: sculptures, installations, collages, paintings and drawings as well as graphics, photography, textile art and video works. The subject matters reflected timeless themes, such as portraits, landscapes and abstractions, as well as current topics, such as environmental issues and the war in Europe.
The application for the exhibition was open to all artists and art students living in Southwest Finland. Latvala selected 42 works from the many impressive proposals for the exhibition.
Latvala describes the selection process:
“The works of the exhibition have been created during an exceptional period that challenges people to reflect on their place in the world and – possibly – to act in new ways. The exhibition creates a space where one can enjoy enlightening works, contemplate the world right now and humanity with its dead ends, utopias and inspirers. Both on the thought and the material levels, many tones of humour and poetry permeate the works. Many of the works draw attention to the animal and plant kingdoms. Non-human beings have collaborated with some of the artists as well – there are works in the exhibition that have been produced with the aid of AI and indoor plants.”
