The 97th Annual Exhibition of Turku Artists’ Association will be presented at Kunsthalle Turku from 12 November to 19 December 2021.
The Annual Exhibition of Turku Artists’ Association is a tradition going back nearly 100 years. The Annual Exhibition 2021 is the 97th of its kind, and the call for applications was open to all artists and artist collectives from Southwest Finland. For many budding artists, the Annual Exhibition of Turku Artists’ Association is the first chance to exhibit their pieces. It also offers the public a snapshot of the current activities in contemporary art.
The essence of the Annual Exhibition is always shaped by its curator. This year, the exhibition was juried by visual artist and fine arts teacher Antero Paavola who selected pieces from 90 artists after reviewing a staggering 165 applications. The exhibition is a diverse selection of pieces featuring a large range of techniques and themes from traditional painting to installations, assemblages and audio pieces integrated with their environment.
Curator Antero Paavola describes the selection process as challenging: “I would have liked to include pieces from every single artist. However, there are spatial limitations to consider.” In fact, the Annual Exhibition will take up all the three galleries at Kunsthalle Turku from floor to ceiling, giving room for the diversity of techniques. Despite the enormous selection process, the curator is satisfied with the exhibition.
“We’ve put together a fine exhibition. Special thanks go to the association’s artists and the active members who took part in the arrangements,” says Paavola.
