Jodo – Silence of Movement is a performance based on collaboration between Japanese calligrapher Yukina Yamamoto, performance artist Tuuli Malla and artist Mari Mäkiö.  The performance is part of Mäkiö’s exhibition Kagekiyodo.

Starting point for the performance have been the japanese characters ‘jodo’ 静動 which describe silence and movement. We have interpreted ‘jodo’ through calligraphy, movement and sound – exploring together what kind of stillness and movement arise from writing the characters. Because Malla and Mäkiö are new to Japanese calligraphy, the interpretations are a combination of Yamamoto’s indepth skill and lingering with the unknown.

Yukina Yamamoto is a Japanese calligraphy artist based in Jyväskylä. She has studied the skill of calligraphy for over 20 years (https://www.facebook.com/yukinascalligraphy/). Tuuli Malla is a performer and installation artist who works site specifically and is inspired by Butoh dance (www.tuulimeanswind.com). Mari Mäkiö is an artist who works primarily with sound and installation (www.marimakio.com).

Due to the prevailing covid situation the performance can be attended by max. 15 audience members in order to keep safe distance. We ask participants to sign up by emailing mari@marimakio.com. Please come to the performance only if you are completely healthy and remember to take care of good hand hygiene and keeping distance to others.

The performance is also available through live stream. Further details are available on the event’s facebook page. For further questions, please contact  Mari Mäkiö (mari@marimakio.com) or Turun Taidehalli.
